The book is written by Mervyn Lister, fourth in a long line of livestock auctioneers and valuers to have sold stock at a livestock auction mart in Otley.
Keen to get involved in the profession, he left school aged 16 to begin studying for the examinations of the Chartered Auctioneers and Estate Agents Institute, which he undertook by means of a correspondence course, whilst working full time in the family business.
F. M. Lister & Son provided the staff to run the auction mart at Bridge End on market days, and Mervyn’s father was the first secretary of Otley Cattle Market Auction Ltd which owned the auction mart premises.
This is a book which records an intriguing but factual record of changing breeds, of changing values, of marketing practices and the people who made up “the market”; the market which is at the heart of any market town.
It gives a first hand account of the inner workings of one business which so many people know something about, but of which they will be interested to learn more.
